Adult, adolescent, child or even baby, bronchitis spares no one. This inflammation of the bronchi is very widespread, it affects 30% of children under two years old. Baby is coughing violently and hasn't stopped crying for hours and hours? A virus has surely taken hold of his small bronchi, also called bronchioles. But don't panic, bronchiolitis is similar to bronchitis in adults. Easy and quick treatments can help your little one to relieve it, reduce fever and dry or severe coughs.

What is this ?

Bronchiolitis is therefore the bronchitis of infants, it is characterized by quite similar symptoms and mainly affects babies during the first months of life up to 2 years old. The infection starts with a very small common cold, runny nose, slight cough; after four to five days it starts to fall on the lower tracks and that's where it gets messy….

A dry touch appears and respiratory discomfort is felt through a slight whistling sound and rapid breathing. In infants the bronchi and bronchioles are narrower than in older children and adults; their inflammations can therefore hinder the flow of air, which is why they can prevent the child from breathing normally. The virus responsible for this infection is called Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

What to do in case of bronchiolitis?

Consult your doctor or usual pediatrician. They know this disease well. They will assess the child as best as possible and prescribe respiratory physiotherapy which clears your child's bronchi and gives him better respiratory comfort. He will also be relieved when it comes to drinking and eating.

In addition, the physiotherapist also knows how to assess the baby's respiratory state and inform the doctor about the progress of the disease.

Tips and advice

Here is a short list of practical advice in case of bronchitis in your child:

  • Drink often and in small quantities;

  • Raise baby's torso to sleep using cushions placed under the mattress;

  • Reduce the room temperature to 18°-19°C;

  • Split meals;

  • Humidify the air in the room;

  • Give a cough suppressant at the start of the illness when the cough is dry. As soon as it becomes greasy, stop giving it. We must respect the wet cough because it allows the evacuation of bronchial secretions;

  • Inform the doctor if your child under 6 months cannot drink more than half of his bottle without vomiting;

  • Do not smoke in the presence of the child or in a room where he or she may stay;

  • Wash your hands before handling the child;

  • Wear a mask if you have a cold.
